Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease that damages the nerves in the spinal cord, brain and optic nerves. Depending on where damage occurs, symptoms can include problems with muscle control, balance, vision or speech.
Nerve damage can cause weakness in the arms or legs, numbness, and muscle spasms. Optic neuritis can cause blurred vision, loss of color vision, or blindness in usually one eye. MS can also cause slurred speech or people may have trouble swallowing.
MS is twice as common in women as it is in men. This disease can be found in any race however caucasians appear to be the most at risk. Development of this condition is the highest in ages 20-50.
Tests can be used to diagnose MS as well as medical history. MRI scans can easily show scar tissue. A spinal tap, and lab tests are other forms of test than can be done to diagnose MS. There is no cure for MS but there are drugs to reduce the frequency and severity of MS attacks. Massages and physical therapy can also help reduce pain levels.
